DISCUSSION:
- To put it bluntly, the last guy to touch this head
and did the machining should never be allowed to get
near an automotive part or a machine shop again.
I could do better at age 8 when my father started
giving me access to the home machine shop. What
comes to mind for the guy's new name... The Butcher of
Cylinder Heads. Well, onto what I discovered.
- Turns out the deck flatness ain't bad. But
take a look at the rocker surface flatness.
Yeah, that's the 0.005" in the first pink
rectangle.
- Next take a look at the variation of thickness...
0.0105" is a mile for a machinist. I have
no idea how anyone could be this far off.
Needless to say, the head is wedge shaped inline and
across. And to get it back to reasonable, a fair
amount of material will need to removed. I
haven't investigated what this means for compression
ratio of valve length, but for a fairly stock motor it
will most likely be fine - once re-machined.
- I didn't even bother with the combustion chamber
volume (cylinder volume in the spreadsheet) because I
think the wedge shape will affect it too much.
- Besides the above issues, this is another on of the
good cast iron heads according to Vizard.
SUMMARY:
- Ok cylinder head that should serve a stock motor
just fine is the verdict... even if you want to port
it and open up the combustion chambers. But,
man... the previous machining. It hurts thinking
about it.
